Since the early 1700’s, Eastern North Carolina has had a varied and exciting history. From the pirate Blackbeard, to the legendary DJ Wolfman Jack, unique personalities inhabit this unique landscape. Coastal North Carolina is home to the East Coast’s largest concentration of Marines including MCB Lejeune, MCB Johnson and MCAS Cherry Point, MCAS New River, all of which house more than 47,000 Marines. Flanked by the Southern Outer Banks and the rich farmland of the Coastal Plain, is Greenville, home of East Carolina University, a college with more than 20,000 students and featuring a school of Medicine and many PhD programs. Several large employers including Weyerhaeuser, Bosch, PCS Phosphates, RBC Centura, Hatteras Yachts and Glaxo Smith Kline also call Eastern North Carolina home. In addition to housing many national and international companies, tourism is a huge economic engine especially along the coastal regions of the state. With the beautiful beaches of the Crystal Coast, Diving Magazines “Best East Coast Diving Destination,” Morehead City, the gateway to the Graveyard of the Atlantic and many Civil War sites, make vacation options in Eastern North Carolina endless.
